“That’s really clever”

“That’s really clever”

This is something our Ostara equipment specialists hear all the time when they visit customers to demonstrate how our alarms work. One of the simplest pieces we offer and one of the most popular is the Ostara fall detector.

What does it look like?

It’s a small box attached to a fabric band similar to a wristwatch. It comes in a choice of styles so customers can choose whether to wear it on a belt at waist level or around their wrist like a watch.  It also features an alarm button that can be pressed at any time the customer feels unsafe or unwell.

How does it work?

There is a dual axis sensor inside the box that measures changes in air pressure, motion and velocity to detect whether the person wearing the detector may have fallen over.

If the sensor detects motion that implies a fall, it vibrates to tell the customer that it has been activated then immediately calls Ostara’s 24 hour response centre in South Gosforth to tell the team the customer may need help.

A member of the 24 hour response team will call the customer straightaway to check they’re ok. If they’re not, of if there is no answer from the customer, a 24 hour response officer will be despatched immediately to visit the customer at home.

Who is it suitable for?

The fall detector is ideal for anyone who has had a fall in the past or who is at risk of falling, perhaps because they have a health problem such as epilepsy that causes seizures or black outs.  It’s also ideal for people who are getting older or becoming frail and unsteady on their feet.

Anything else?

It has a 1-2 year battery life with a daily self-test function so customers don’t have to worry about the battery running out and letting them down.

It’s also splashproof so can be worn in the kitchen and bathroom.
